If you play guitar and do any type of traveling, or if you need to have your guitar worked on sooner or later you’ll have to figure out a way to get your precious cargo from point A to B. To ship a guitar can take allot of time to do it right, the following information will shed some light on this important subject. The TV Show Jeopardy recently had a question, “which airline Breaks guitars and the correct answer was addressed by Watson the super computer robot.
When shipping a guitar the most important aspect is to make sure that the guitar is protected no matter what the carrier or how it is handled, it will most likely be tossed about. (See Roof Toss Video Here)
There is only one way to go if you want to save your self a bunch of time and be sure it’s done correctly every time. And that’s either pack your guitar in its own case and then in another type of shipping box or find the best shipping a guitar type of premade case available.
A guitar being shipped or anything else passes through several people’s hands during its journey. To assume that all of them are going to handle the package carefully would be foolish. I subscribe to the notion that the guitar case should be designed in such a way that it will survive no matter how poorly it is handled during its journey.
When shipping a guitar the first order of business is to make sure that it is shipped in a case that has plenty of shock absorbing material either built into the case or the guitar its self is wrapped with bubble wrap and then placed into a protective box of some sort. Or a good foam padded gig bag and then placed into a hard shell protective case. These efforts will provide the most protection for your guitar and can take a huge amount of time and effort.
As a business owner time is always money. If you ship guitars on a regular basis you know that the packing materials you need can add up substantially. And if you plan on having the guitar shipped back to you make sure that the person that is re-packing it uses new packing materials because the original ones especially the cardboard box has been weakened from the first trip. So this is more time and money spent. And if you use those foam peanuts this needs to be done correctly and equally placed around the case of the guitar so that they are centered inside its shipping container. Now if you’ve done this before you know you will spill these peanuts all over the place and if there is a breeze they will fly everywhere. This is another waste of time and effort chasing them down and picking these things up. Then there is the environmental issue when you want to get rid of them.
Here is how to pack your guitar for shipping. Just get yourself one of our guitar shipping cases. A guitar can be correctly packed in about 30 seconds there is no mess and the same case will last for years.
Remove any unnecessary items from the case that don’t need to be shipped. Place anything that must ship with the guitar such as (stings, parts to be installed etc.) in the accessory compartment. And always try to cut down on the overall weight of your package when ever possible. Place a pair of rolled up socks or other padding on top and under the head stock for even more protection to keep that area from moving back a fourth.
